Web 2.0 Wikipedia Summary
Web 2.0:
-Web Orientated Architecture (WOA-defining how the Web 2.0 applications help other applications to develop the Web 2.0 characteristics)
- Social User (How the end user can interact more with Web 2.0)
- Using the network to allow communication and sharing from the public
- Examples include: Social networking (Facebook/Twitter), blogs (Blogspot), wiki's (Wikipedia/Wiki Answers) and Audio/Visual Sharing sites (YouTube)
- The term was first used in Jan 1999 by Darcy DiNucci
- Many theorists have used it since then to identify the fact that the media is changing
- Web 2.0 gives users a certain amount of control over the network
- Also known as the 'participatory web' (B. Decrem)
- Ajax is the key technology in Web 2.0 as it participates with all web browsers easily and quickly
- There are 3 concepts to Web 2.0:
-Web Orientated Architecture (WOA-defining how the Web 2.0 applications help other applications to develop the Web 2.0 characteristics)
- Social User (How the end user can interact more with Web 2.0)
- Websites include SLATES: Search, Link, Authoring, Tags, Extensions, Signals
- Mainly used to help people communicate (i.e. blogging, podcasting, tagging), and in particular, businesses to help communicate with customers (marketing)
- Used in education- students who were brought up in a new media environment often work better using Web 2.0 technology (they can communicate with other students)
- Used in philanthropy- charities can more easily access sponsors/funds with Web 2.0
- Used in Social Work- it is easier to keep track of/help people if they can communicate more easily
- Web 2.0 is also used for media distribution
- Criticism's include the fact that Web 2.0 is very similar to Web 1.0, that companies are being exploited with free labour online, that too many companies are making the same products for users in the Web 2.0 model, and that it is encouraging narcissism and unamiable relations between users
- Web 3.0 is the future version of Web 2.0, which is still in development and experts say will require almost no human interaction whatsoever
